Not Just a Rom Com… Reviewing Adriana Anders’ Dom Com

This review is based on an Advanced Reader Copy granted by Edelweiss Books and does not reflect any edits or changes that came about before publicaiton.

Adriana Anders’ latest novel follows Rae Jensen, a baby sub just dipping her toe into the kinky waters. Rae works up the nerve to walk into Richmond’s newest sex club and enters a world she’d only ever dreamed about. During Dom/sub speed dating, Rae is paired with The General, a handsome, mysterious Dom who insists he’s not taking on a sub right now. After sharing a moment she can’t stop thinking about, Rae leaves the club expecting that to be the last she interacts with The General… Until she comes face to face with him the next day. In her office.

With the two working together, forced to share the same office, tensions rise and things get steamy. Grant “The General” Bowman is a chronic commitment-phobe with no interest in anything long-term and prefers to keep everyone at arms-length, especially new subs that need time, care, and attention. But he can’t seem to get Rae out of his mind and she’s not making it easy for him.

Dom Com isn’t just a great romance novel — it’s a really lovely, heartfelt letter to the BDSM community. The stakes aren’t uncomfortably high and the kink isn’t anything more than you might see on a good HBO show, but the conversations about consent, the construction of play sessions, the rigorous rules for every scene and Dom/sub relationship established, those are worth every second of reading — if all the smut and heartwrenching romance isn’t enough, of course.

As a total nerd of all things D/s and kink-related, I knew I had to read this novel the first chance I got, but I had no idea how much I would love it!

I devoured this book in twenty-four hours, reading it every time I had a spare second. I read this book like it was my job — even while I was at my job! I couldn’t stop thinking about it or imagining all the ways it could go wrong before it went right.

A problem that plagues mainstream romance is the unwillingness of major publishers to dig into anything that doesn’t fit the “could this be a Hallmark movie if we remove the smut” threshold. Sure, there are a few notable exceptions to that rule but, for the most part, discussion of actual kink and the community surrounding it is pretty limited. Which is what makes Dom Com such a refreshing read. I really loved the immediate establishment of rules, respect, pronoun conversations, consent, and boundaries. That alone would earn it at least four stars.

Despite all of that, however, the kink just isn’t there the way I’d like it to be. We had a few great, steamy, well-constructed scenes and then everything else was just standard sex. I’m not mad about it! The scenes were panty-meltingly hot, but I did find myself wishing something that focused so heavily on kink at the beginning could have brought a bit more of that kink into the rest of the novel. I would have loved to see how Grant and Rae explored their Dom/sub relationship IRL instead of just during scenes, but I felt that those moments were left as an afterthought.

There were a few moments that felt a little silly or far-fetched, like Rae going on to own a successful business constructing book nooks, but they’re the kind of silly romance moments that I’m more than willing to suspend disbelief for!

Overall, I was obsessed with this novel! It’s an absolute “yes” from me, and I’ll probably never stop talking about it or recommending it.
