Dark Romances Made for Spooky Season

There’s really no one appropriate season for dark romances. In my opinion, any season is the right season for those! However, it’s not a reach to say that dark romances feel particularly well-suited for the spookier season. Halloween is creeping up on us, and there’s totally time to get at least one book read (or ten?) between now and then.

If you’re looking for your next dark romance obsession, check out these titles. I’ve got a few on my TBR, I’ve read a few, and I’ve had a few recommended to me. As always — make sure you check the book’s trigger warnings before starting! I always want y’all taking care of yourselves first! And if you’re not quite sure what a “dark romance” even is — check out this article I wrote breaking it down for you.

I don’t give you a spice level for these books as I have yet to read a dark romance that isn’t so spicy it burns.

Tourist Season

Brynne Weaver

Brynne Weaver takes on a totally new, but equally twisted journey in her latest trilogy, “The Seasons of Carnage.” This one is giving small town, touch them and die, grump x grump, forced proximity vibes, and I’m here for it!

Journey to a seaside town with colorful houses, idyllic gardens, and a body count that continues to rise thanks to Harper Starling, who won’t abide problematic tourists. To protect her beautiful home and her aging mentor, she’ll stop at nothing, even using those troublesome tourists as compost in her gorgeous garden beds.

Enter Nolan Rhodes. Charming, gorgeous, and more than a little mysterious, Nolan is on a mission for revenge, and he won’t let anything get in the way of his next target — Harper.

But what if Harper isn’t quite who he expected? And what happens when an amateur true-crime investigator seeks to throw a wrench in both of their plans?

Terror at the Gates

Scarlett St. Clair

Want a new romantasy series to sink your teeth into? Enjoy slow-burn, frenemies-to-lovers, he-falls-first, tension-so-hot-it’ll-melt-your-boots, mafia fantasy vibes? Then Scarlett St. Clair’s latest is for you!

Dive into a world of powerful families, an even more powerful religious institution, and plenty of intrigue.

Lilith Leviathan, estranged from her powerful family, has found refuge in Nineveh, the city of Eden’s district of sin. When a beautiful dagger falls into her lap, she thinks all her problems are solved. And then her buyer dies while inspecting the blade.

Lilith runs to the only person she knows can help her, Zahariev. The ruler of Nineveh and head of the Zareth family, Zahariev is more than a little powerful and has a soft spot for Lilith, but even his power might not be enough to protect her from the dagger and what it brings.

The two embark on a mission to uncover the power that rules their world and realize they mean more to one another than they thought, but their newfound devotion is a threat to those who rule.

Phantasma

Kaylie Smith

A deadly contest. Nine challenges. A haunted, maze-like mansion full of demons and temptations.

The prize? A single wish.

To save her sister, Ophelia will brave it and win, but her fellow contestants will stop at nothing to win, even killing Ophelia.

With new monsters created daily by the house and Ophelia’s fears threatening to overcome her, an offer by a mysterious stranger couldn’t come at a better time. Blackwell says he can guide her through the remaining challenges and see her win; all he asks for is ten years of her life. Unwilling to lose the chance to save her sister, Ophelia strikes a bargain, but she might lose a little more than she bargained for.

The scenes are spicy, dark, and just as twisty as the plot; the romance is forbidden, the proximity is forced. What’s not to love?

Desperate Measures

Katee Robert

If you like a good retelling, this one is for you! Katee Robert is the queen of spicy romance, and Desperate Measures is no exception to her skilled work.

Immerse yourself in the world of Jafar and Jasmine, but be warned — these are not the Disney characters you know. Jafar isn’t gross and lecherous, Jasmine isn’t in love with Aladdin, and none of these scenes are rated G.

After losing her fortune to a bargain with Jafar, Jasmine finds herself trapped and subject to the man’s every whim. The enemies-to-lovers trope is working overtime here, the characters explore power dynamics and consensual non-consent, and the scenes are beyond spicy — it’s a can’t-miss dark romance!
